About the Brand:

Here’s the quick history of Eddie Bauer—for vintage lovers:

1920 — Seattle beginnings. Eddie Bauer opened a tiny tennis-racket shop in downtown Seattle, soon expanding it into an outfitter’s sport shop.

1936–1940 — The down revolution. After a near-hypothermia scare, Bauer developed the Skyliner down jacket (1936) and later received the U.S. patent for a quilted down jacket (1940)—a first in America.

WWII — Military gear. The brand supplied the U.S. Army Air Forces with B-9 flight parkas/A-8 pants and hundreds of thousands of down sleeping bags, cementing its national reputation.

1945 — Catalog era (and women’s line). Bauer launched a mail-order catalog soon after adding women’s clothing, which helped take the company nationwide.

1971–2003 — Ownership changes & growth. Sold to General Mills (1971), then to Spiegel (1988), expanding from technical outerwear into broader casual apparel (including lots of sweaters).
